Pretty sure I got some sort of virus that caused this problem for me as well a while ago when I was trying to download an academic paper from a non legit source (I had to like get a special program to open it, but it was bogus. Plus, the Internet networking quit very recently, long after I upgraded the computer to 10.14. Its code may have been incompatible with MacOS 10.14. Now I have to hope that nothing sensitive was stolen by this man-in-the-middle proxy trojan! I am thinking not, though, since Internet networking wouldn't work at all until I disabled the SOCKS proxy. Now a SOCKS proxy is not being set up anymore when the computer starts up.Įven with Macintosh, you gotta be careful where you surf to on the Internet! Products like Malwarebytes and others would not be available for Mac if there wasn't a problem needing a solution! It found 'mitmproxy' as well as seven other things which I promptly deleted or quarantined. I actually wound up using Malwarebytes for Mac to take care of the problem. There was a file somewhere in the system blatantly named '/var/tmp/mitmproxy', and removing this along with a number of other things fixed the problem. Its startup did not appear in the list of login items. There was a bit of malware buried in the system.
